Dr. Valerie Kading is CEO of Sunrise Ranch in Riverside, California, and Sierra by the Sea in Newport Beach, California, both a part of the newly-formed Sierra Tucson Group of behavioral health facilities offering inpatient, residential, and outpatient treatment for substance use and co-occurring disorders. Formerly Chief Operating Officer of Sierra Tucson in Tucson, Arizona, Dr. Kading serves on the Sierra Tucson Executive Leadership Council, and heads up Sierra Tucson’s Alumni Services and the Connect365 continuing care treatment program.
Dr. Kading joined Sierra Tucson in June, 2015, and since that time has championed several programs that have led to improved operational efficiencies and profitability. Among her many accomplishments, she instituted the five-day Comprehensive Assessment Program and led the facility’s implementation of the electronic health record and computerized physician order entry system, dramatically decreasing paperwork and increasing face-to-face time with patients. With her expertise in postpartum care, she was instrumental in Sierra Tucson’s selection and certification in 2019 as only one of two facilities in Arizona chosen as qualified to administer Zulresso™, an IV anti-depressant medication for women suffering from postpartum depression.
She has written articles for multiple professional journals, and has led a variety of webinars, CEU events, and C4 conferences for organizations including: the Recovery Plus Conference, London, United Kingdom; Grand Canyon University; Southern Arizona Advanced Practice/Nurse Practitioner’s Primary Care Conferences; Tucson Postpartum Coalition; Philippine Nurses Association; University of Arizona Collee of Nursing Cultural Competency Workshop, and many others.
Dr. Kading graduated with honors from New Mexico State University in 2016 with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Her doctoral studies focused on optimizing health care systems and policies, translational methods and evidence-based practice, health care organization innovation, epigenetics, utilization of informatics in healthcare, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her dissertation focused on increasing health care provider knowledge on perinatal depression. She created a web-based educational program for health care providers aimed at facilitating evidence-based treatment to perinatal women. She graduated with honors from the University of Arizona in 2004 with a master’s degree in nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2002, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1996. Dr. Kading also received a Master of Business Administration at The University of Arizona in 2019. In 2006, she founded the Southern Arizona Advanced Practice Nurse – Nurse Practitioner Society, a professional organization for nurse practitioners. Starting with just five members, today the organization has over 300 members active at the local and state level. The organization offer scholarships to nurse practitioner students and holds an annual primary care conference where over 150 medical professionals attend from all over Arizona.
Dr. Kading’s educational background and experiences in psychology, medical, business and administrative operations, has given her a unique perspective to deliver care with a lens toward clinical excellence and efficiency that benefits both the patient and the facility’s bottom line. Prior to serving as Chief Operating officer, she served as chief medical operations officer and interim chief medical officer at Sierra Tucson. As interim Chief Medical Officer at Sierra Tucson she led a team of physicians, nurse practitioners and PAs, during which time the medical team excelled in provision of medical and psychiatric care. As an integral member of the Executive Leadership Council, Dr. Kading is active in the following committees, including: Process Improvement, Policy & Procedures; Pharmacy & Therapeutics; Safety, Core Service Treatment Plan; and Leadership.
