Learn more about marijuana abuse treatment at Sierra by the Sea

Marijuana, which is also referred to by several slang terms including pot, weed, or herb, is a drug made from dried parts of the cannabis plant. Its active ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is a psychoactive substance that typically induces feelings of euphoria, relaxation, and altered sensory experiences, though it can also cause users to feel intense anxiety, paranoia, and depression. Marijuana is most commonly smoked, though it can also be cooked in food and eaten, smoked in a vaporizer, brewed in a tea, or ingested in a lozenge or other formulation. While marijuana has been legalized in a number of states, it remains a powerful drug with the potential to be abused, and if it is abused, it can cause significant disruption across many domains of a person’s life. People who abuse marijuana may perform poorly at work, potentially leading to job loss or financial strain, and their relationships may suffer, possibly leading to relational damage or social isolation, to name a few of the myriad possible negative consequences of abuse. Other possible negative consequences may include respiratory damage, long-term cognitive impairment, or exacerbation of other mental health symptoms.

While the consequences of marijuana abuse can be severe and life-altering, at Sierra by the Sea in Newport Beach, California, we understand how to help our clients escape the grip of marijuana abuse and begin to recover a life free of substances through professional and personalized marijuana addiction rehabilitation at our treatment center.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for marijuana abuse

Trying to help a loved one who is abusing marijuana can be a painful ordeal, and at times it may even seem as though there is nothing you do can help. While it is understandable to feel overwhelmed, there may still be a few ways you can help your loved one take steps towards sobriety, such as:

  • Spend time researching marijuana abuse treatment centers and find a few that may be a good fit for your loved one. Investigate each treatment center’s treatment philosophy, and feel free to contact staff at each center to ask them about their approach to treatment.
  • Investigate the signs, symptoms, and effects of marijuana use. Learn about marijuana and learn to recognize the signs of abuse and intoxication.
  • Have open and honest conversations with your loved one. Talk with your loved one about his or her marijuana abuse and share your concern with him or her. These conversations will likely be difficult and your loved one may resist you, but try your best to remain open and non-judgmental. Emphasize your love for him or her and your desire to see your loved one live to the fullest extent of his or her potential.
  • If your loved agrees that addiction rehab at a treatment center for marijuana abuse is the best option for him or her, help facilitate the process. Offer to set up appointments with treatment center staff and make yourself available to accompany your loved one to those appointments. During treatment, remain an active presence in your loved one’s life and send encouragement and love frequently.
  • During this process, make sure you do not neglect your own health. Helping someone with a substance abuse problem get help at a marijuana addiction treatment center can be draining, so spend time engaging in activities that replenish you. Invest in your relationships and make time for your own hobbies.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for marijuana abuse at Sierra by the Sea in Newport Beach, CA

Although marijuana use has been legalized in a number of states, marijuana can be a dangerous drug. If it is abused, it has the potential to cause widespread devastation in many areas of a person’s life. Marijuana use can impair a person’s work performance, possibly leading job loss and subsequent financial difficulties. It can strain relationships and lead to divorce, loss of child custody, and social isolation. It can also lead to physical problems, such as respiratory damage or injury from engaging in risky behavior while high, and it can lead to psychological problems like long-term cognitive impairment, lack of motivation, onset or worsening of other mental health symptoms, or development of other substance use disorders. Despite these severe effects, however, with proper rehab and care from professionals at a marijuana abuse treatment center it is possible to minimize many of the negative repercussions of marijuana abuse.

At Sierra by the Sea, we are dedicated to upholding a standard of excellence as we provide comprehensive, medically monitored chemical dependency treatment for individuals who are struggling with an addiction to alcohol or drugs, including marijuana. Our treatment center is located steps away from a beautiful beach setting in Newport Beach, California. In this setting, Sierra by the Sea offers clients the ideal environment to embark on their journey to recovery. Our expert team of therapists, drug counselors, nurses, and clinical technicians are devoted to meeting clients where they are at in their recovery and customizing their treatment experience to meet all of their needs. At Sierra by the Sea, we offer a designated men’s program and a women’s program where gender-specific groups are held and programming is altered based on the various issues that men and women face. During various activities, however, men and women will engage in programming together while at our marijuana addiction treatment center.

When engaging in a residential rehab program at a treatment center for marijuana addiction at Sierra by the Sea, clients will have the opportunity to take part in the following therapeutic interventions:

Detoxification: When clients come to us with drugs or alcohol still in their systems, it may be most appropriate for them to take part in the detoxification process prior to fully engaging in the therapeutic aspect of programming. Clients will be seen by the doctor within 24 to 48 hours of being admitted into the program. The detox process is monitored 24/7 by our compassionate nursing staff, and our treatment professionals do everything in their power to ensure that clients’ detox process is safe and as comfortable as possible.

Medication management: When clients come to us with a preexisting psychiatric diagnosis, they will be required to meet with our medical director or one of our physician’s assistants once each week. When a co-occurring psychiatric disorder is not present alongside a client’s addiction to marijuana, then he or she will only be required to meet with the medical director or one of our physician’s assistants once during his or her stay. All medication management is handled by the medical director and our qualified nursing staff.

Individual therapy: Individual therapy sessions are an important part of the therapeutic process at Sierra by the Sea as they are designed to provide clients with time to meet one-on-one with a mental health professional to discuss any concerns they have or to review the progress they are making in treatment. Our certified addiction counselors work closely with our marriage and family therapist interns and trainees to conduct these sessions in a manner that is most beneficial to meeting the clients’ needs. Each client will meet with his or her substance abuse counselor twice per week during their time in our marijuana addiction treatment center for progress updates. The marriage and family therapist intern or trainee will also meet with the client at least once per week, with additional sessions being added on an as-needed basis.

Family therapy: Our marriage and family therapist interns and trainees will conduct family therapy sessions once each week if the client’s family members are available and if the client wishes to integrate them into his or her treatment plan. Depending upon the needs of the client, teleconference sessions with the client and his or her family members may also be incorporated into the client’s individual therapy sessions.

Group therapy: Group therapy sessions are a central component to the treatment offered at Sierra by the Sea, with numerous group sessions being held throughout the day. Marriage and family therapist interns, marriage and family therapist trainees, chemical dependency counselors, and clinical technicians are responsible for leading the various groups that clients participate in. Participation in these group sessions is required and the curriculum of topics that are covered during these sessions may include the following:

  • Anger management
  • Defense mechanisms
  • Relapse prevention
  • Spirituality
  • Nutrition and wellness
  • How the disease has impacted clients and their families in a negative manner

Once clients have completed residential programming, we will work to ensure that all clients have a solid support system in place prior to leaving residential treatment.
