Before making any admissions decision, our admissions coordinators speak with potential residents and their family members in order to complete an assessment and determine if Sierra by the Sea’s program can meet their needs. This assessment includes an open discussion with these individuals regarding their current needs, goals, and medical and treatment history. Our residential program provides care for adults who meet the following criteria:
- Age 18 and older
- Have a primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder (this is the clinical term for addiction)
- Do not have active thoughts of suicide or recent suicide attempts
- Do not have unmanaged mental health diagnoses that require hospitalization
In addition to offering personalized care to help adults recover from substance use disorders, we also provide individualized care for those with co-occurring mental health conditions.

A coordinator will then guide you through an informal discussion regarding your medical history, past care, and current needs. An admissions coordinator will also check your benefits to determine whether your insurance will cover a stay at Sierra by the Sea.
This part of the admissions process will help determine if our program is a good fit for your needs. By providing this information, you’ll allow us to ensure you have the specialized residential care you deserve to start your journey toward wellness.
At Sierra by the Sea, we recognize that we are not the right recovery center for everyone’s needs. If we determine that we cannot provide the care best suited for your situation, we will assist you and your family in finding another program that will better fit your current circumstances. If our introductory call indicates our program is right for you, we will schedule a date for a formal assessment on our campus.
Upon entering our beachside campus in beautiful Newport Beach, California, a team member will greet you and assist you in acclimating to our center. This member of our staff will help you complete your paperwork and ask questions that will prepare our team to best serve you during your stay. That team member will also answer any additional questions you have, go over what you can bring into your housing accommodations, and explain the process for storing any belongings that are not allowed on campus.

What to Bring With You
Items that are allowed on our campus in Newport Beach, CA
During the initial assessment process, our admissions coordinator will provide you with information regarding campus policies. Before arriving at our center in Newport Beach, California, be sure to bring suggested items with you and leave prohibited items home. This will ensure your first day goes as smoothly as possible.
We recommend bringing the following items:
- Identification card (driver’s license or other form)
- Health insurance card
- Currently prescribed medications in their original bottles
- Casual, comfortable clothing that fits appropriately (no large, baggy clothing or any clothing that exposes your midriff or underwear)
In order to foster a safe and supportive environment at Sierra by the Sea, the following items are prohibited:
- Weapons of any kind
- Substances of any kind
If you bring any of these items on your first day, they will be sent home with your family members or safely stored until the end of your stay.
