Samuel Shapiro, MD

Medical Director

Samuel Shapiro, MD, received his Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College in Northfield, MN in 1975, and his medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL in 1979. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at UCLA in Los Angeles, CA in 1982. From 1982 to 2004, Dr. Shapiro maintained a private practice in Los Angeles in anesthesiology and acute pain management, first at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for 12 years, and then at Olympia Medical Center, where he served as the chairman of the Department of Anesthesia for 15 years.

After retiring from anesthesia in 2005, he took a hiatus from medical practice and devoted himself full-time to a lifelong dream of becoming a helicopter pilot, which he continues to enjoy. In preparing to re-enter medical practice, Dr. Shapiro became interested in addiction medicine, in particular the alarming increase of prescription opioid pain medicine abuse in our society. Dr. Shapiro completed a fellowship in addiction medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA from 2009–2010, and he has practiced addiction medicine exclusively ever since.

Dr. Shapiro is board certified by both the American Board of Addiction Medicine and the American Board of Anesthesiology. Additionally, he is a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the California Society of Addiction Medicine.

Until leaving California in 2014, Dr. Shapiro served on the State of California’s Board of Registered Nursing Diversion Evaluation Committee, where he helped to monitor registered nurses with substance use disorders and evaluate their appropriateness for return to work and license status.

Dr. Shapiro is an avid hiker (climbed to the summit of Mt. Whitney in 2013) and a former competitive road cyclist.
